With its engaging storyline, highly talented cast and inspirational messagingKyunki.
Ayyub was born and brought up in Delhi. He graduated from Kirori Mal College and completed his theater training from National School of Drama (NSD), Delhi. He married Rasika Agashe in 2007. They have a daughter named Raahi Khan (born 2015).
Acting career[edit]
Early work (2011—13)[edit]
Ayyub made his acting debut with Raj Kumar Gupta's biographical thriller No One Killed Jessica (2011), which also starred Vidya Balan and Rani Mukerji. Based on the murder case of Jessica Lal, the film saw Ayyub portray the real-life character of Manu Sharma, Jessica's true murderer. The film, as well as his performance, generated positive reviews from critics. With earnings of over ₹1 billion (US$14 million), No One Killed Jessica emerged as a critical and commercial success, and garnered him nominations for the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut and the Zee Cine Award for Best Performance in a Negative Role.[3] In his second release of the year, Ayyub appeared in Ali Abbas Zafar's directorial debut—the romantic comedy Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, about a man who finds a bride for his elder brother but falls in love with her instead. Co-starring alongside Katrina Kaif, Imran Khan, and Ali Zafar, he played the role of Khan's friend. Mere Brother Ki Dulhan proved his second consecutive box-office hit and earned over ₹760 million (US$11 million) worldwide.[4] In 2011, he also appeared in a cameo role for the successful romantic comedy Tanu Weds Manu, which marked the first of his four films with Aanand L. Rai.
In 2012, Ayyub took another supporting role—this time in Kunal Deshmukh's thriller Jannat 2, co-starring Emraan Hashmi, Esha Gupta, and Randeep Hooda. Initially titled Informer, its title was changed to Jannat 2, making it a sequel to Jannat (2008). The film garnered a mixed critical reception, but eventually emerged as a financial success with global earnings of over ₹680 million (US$9.5 million), becoming Ayyub's fourth consecutive box office hit.
Ayyub next appeared in Aanand L. Rai's romantic drama Raanjhanaa (2013), alongside Dhanush, Sonam Kapoor, and Abhay Deol, in which he played the character of Dhanush's friend. The feature received mostly positive reviews and proved to be a major commercial success with a worldwide revenue of more than ₹1.13 billion (US$16 million).[5][6] In his next film—Hansal Mehta's National Film Award-winning biographical drama Shahid, starring Rajkummar Rao as slain lawyer and human rights activist Shahid Azmi—Ayyub played Arif Azmi who is Azmi's brother. The film generated overwhelmingly mixed reviews though became commercially successful at the box office.
Career struggles, Tanu Weds Manu 2, and hiatus (2014—15)[edit]
In 2014, Ayyub reteamed with Kunal Deshmukh in the action comedy Raja Natwarlal, which starred Emraan Hashmi as the titular protagonist. The film received positive reactions but turned out to be a major box-office failure, grossing ₹295 million (US$4.1 million) on a budget of ₹417 million (US$5.8 million), and generated unfavourable profits for Ayyub's performance.
In 2015, Ayyub appeared in four films, the first of which was Abhishek Dogra's directorial debut—the comedy Dolly Ki Doli, co-starring Sonam Kapoor, Pulkit Samrat, Rajkummar Rao, and Varun Sharma. The film, about a woman who marries men from different religions and runs with their wealth on the wedding night, received negative reviews and flopped at the box office. Ayyub's next two releases were the action comedy All is Well and the spy thriller Phantom, both of which were also box office failures. His final release of the year was a second collaboration with Aanand L. Rai in Tanu Weds Manu: Returns, a romantic comedy that served as a sequel to Tanu Weds Manu (2011). Ayyub featured as Chintu Kumar Singh, a lawyer and an admirer of the titular protagonist (played by Kangana Ranaut). Unlike the actor's previous four films, it emerged as a huge commercial success grossing over ₹1 billion (US$14 million) in India and over ₹2 billion (US$28 million) worldwide, making it among Ayyub's highest-grossing releases.
Raees, Tubelight, and work in flop expensive films (2017—18)[edit]
After a two-year absence from full-time acting, Ayyub appeared in Rahul Dholakia's crime drama Raees (2017), in which he starred alongside Shah Rukh Khan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, and Mahira Khan, and played the friend of the titular anti-hero, played by Khan. Said to be based on the life of criminal Abdul Latif, Raees generated mixed to positive reviews from critics. But with grossings of over ₹3 billion (US$42 million) worldwide, it proved to be Ayyub's highest-grossing release and one of the highest-grossing Indian films of all time. He next appeared in Kabir Khan's war drama Tubelight, portraying the role of Salman Khan's friend. Commercially, Tubelight turned out to be a success and collected a total of ₹2.11 billion (US$30 million). In his final release of the year, Ayyub played his first leading and the title role in Dakxin Chhara's directorial debut—the action drama Sameer—another box office disappointment.
In 2018, Ayyub acted in Vijay Krishna Acharya's period adventure action drama Thugs of Hindostan and Aanand L. Rai's comedy-drama Zero, both of which were among the list of the most expensive Hindi films having a budget of ₹2 billion (US$28 million), and with a budget of ₹2.40 billion (US$34 million), the former ranks as the most expensive Hindi film. Both the films generated mixed reviews and failed at the both Indian and overseas box office, thus making 2018 a unsuccessful year in Ayyub's career.
Manikarnika and other supporting roles (2019—present)[edit]
Ayyub's first release of 2019 was the biographical war drama Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi, based on the life of freedom fighter Rani Lakshmi Bai, portrayed by Kangana Ranaut in the film. His role was originally portrayed by Sonu Sood, who left the film because of some disagreements with the film's makers as the director Krish got replaced, and was subsequently replaced by Ayyub. The film was released generally to positive response, but was a modest commercial success at the box office earning more than ₹1.32 billion (US$19 million).
Later that year, Ayyub co-starred with Ayushmann Khurrana in Anubhav Sinha's crime thriller Article 15. Highlighting caste discrimination in India, it was inspired by multiple events, including the 2014 Badaun gang rape allegations and the 2016 Una flogging incident. Commercially, the film earned over ₹850 million (US$12 million) and proved an economic success. He next starred alongside Diljit Dosanjh and Kriti Sanon on Rohit Jugraj Chauhan's spoof comedy Arjun Patiala, a major commercial disaster. This changed later that year when Ayyub played Rishi Aggarwal, an army officer whose devoted wife (essayed by Taapsee Pannu) becomes a nurse for him, in Jagan Shakti's directorial debut Mission Mangal—a science fiction film about the scientists who contributed to the Mars Orbiter Mission held in 2013. With domestic earnings of over ₹1.98 billion (US$28 million), it emerged as a huge success and one of his most commercially successful features.
Ayyub will next reunite with Hansal Mehta and Rajkummar Rao for the social comedy film Turram Khan, which is scheduled to be released on 31 January 2020.

This section's plot summary may be. Please by removing unnecessary details and making it more concise. ( September 2018) The film opens with writer Alia Patrick (ManjariFadnis) receiving an award at the White House. However, Alia receives a bad news from India and she hurries back to the county.
Lakshmi (Supriya Pathak) had died. The film flashes back to Alia's childhood. Her father, a factory worker, struggles to send his two sons and Alia to a good school, and his limited finances which compels him to move Alia to a government school. Undeterred, Alia focuses on her studies and writing and writes for the school paper. She meets Alex (Himansh Kohli), her first love, in college. She continues writing and her work catches her principal's eye and she is sent to interview KunwarVikram Singh(Ashutosh Rana) the ruler of a former royal kingdom. The prince is arrogant and misogynous at first but Alia quietly and firmly puts him in his place.
The prince comes around and fancies Alia but she despises him entirely. He sends expensive gifts to Alia's weak-willed father and asks her hand for marriage. She refuses the proposal. Her father forces her to get married as this marriage will be a great (financial) help to her ailing and debt-ridden family.
Alia tearfully gives in and bids Alex goodbye. She enters the royal palace where she quickly learnt that her royal duties are limited to producing male children and presiding over the palace chores. (She cannot leave the palace.) In time she discovers that her husband, the prince, a drunk and a playboy is brutal to the servants and abusive towards her. Alia's only solace is her handmaiden Lakshmi.
Lakshmi also manages the household and attends to grievances from the local townsfolk. One day the prince discovers Alia's journal which chronicles her unhappy marriage and has it burnt. Alia faints from the shock. She is pregnant.
The prince quietly instructs the head servant and the hospital staff to ‘do the needful’ (meaning kill the girl child). Alia is devastated. Lakshmi helps her flee from the palace and packs her off on a bus to Mumbai.
It is a touching moment when Lakshmi gives her own jewels to Alia.Alia arrives in Mumbai and follows a tea-vendor boy to his orphanage. The orphanage manager is too happy to have her stay with them so she can teach the orphan children. She starts a new life here. She eventually applies for a writer job at a small magazine run by the eccentric, eclectic, Urdu lover Shaukat Mirza (Prem Chopra). This Mirza believes in serious journalism and is sceptical if the young and wide-eyed Alia is up for the job. But Alia walks through the slums and bylanes and draws upon her own struggles to produce a Bombay report which so impresses Mirza that he hires her on the spot.
Alia gives birth to a baby girl.Alia meets the wealthy NRI Aditya Kapoor (Arbaaz Khan) at one of his charity events and confronts him about the reporters at the event: is it about charity or about raising his public profile? She eventually discovers that he rings true; it is about charity, the reporters were incidental, and the charity is his way of reaching out to his parents who both died a long time ago. Aditya asks her out but she turns him away.Mirza recommends Alia's work overseas and she receives a job offer from a New York newspaper. She turns it down as she does not want to leave Mirza who has come to be a father figure to her. But when KunwarVikram Singh finds her in Mumbai Alia realizes she cannot be safe in India anymore. She signs over her share of the royal properties in exchange for a divorce.
And she is forced to leave Mirza and her orphanage behind and go to New York. Her life starts anew. She becomes engrossed in her work as a reporter. She meets Aditya Kapoor again at a party where she muses about him. She volunteers for an assignment to cover the war in the Middle East.
This is a grand success and she is rewarded with a promotion. But her joy is short-lived when she discovers that her envious and spiteful female co-workers accuse her of sleeping with Aditya Kapoor (who, unbeknownst to her, is a trustee of the newspaper) to get the promotion.
Horrified, she confronts him. He admits he had brought her to New York but the promotion was her own effort. She says she wants to give it all up and return to India. At this juncture, Aditya admits that he loves her.
He also forcefully says that running away is not fair to all the people – her school principal, Mirza, the New York paper, Lakshmi, and Aditya himself – who genuinely thought she was a good writer and helped her go forward. She realises Aditys’s worth and decides to get married to him.The film ends as Alia cremates her beloved Lakshmi.Cast. as Aditya Kapoor, is a suave and successful NRI businessman based in USA.
